How are People Saved
Ephesians 2:8–9:
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.
See What is Faith
It is not entirely clear to me what this is, but I believe it is faith that God exists and His nature is as He describes it in the Bible. God created everything including us. The Bible is God's (living) words to us. We are fallen beings and are guilty of sinning against God, and when we die there is either an eternity with God in heaven or a "hell" of an eternity in the Lake of Fire waiting for us. It also includes our belief in the gospel, God's way of salvation.
When we actually believe those things, we will naturally want to learn about what God told us and want to follow him, and as we learn more, if we read and come to God with humility (Micah 6:8) rather than with judgement we the whole situation will become more clear. It is natural to love God and to know and follow Him.
Proverbs 9:10 (KJV)
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.
Romans 10:17 (KJV)
So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
God tells us that all but a few are going to go to destruction:
Matthew 7:13–14 (KJV)
Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
Luke 13:23–24 (KJV)
Then said one unto him, Lord, are there few that be saved? And he said unto them, Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able.
All we have is a relatively short life here and all but a few will not be saved. We become saved by God's grace based on our faith, and once we believe we will want to help as many others as possible to also see God clearly.
