What is Sin
God created us and the entire universe, and had some basic expectations for us in the world He gave us
Sin is when we do not follow the commands and otherwise rebel against God making us guilty before God
When we sin against others, we are more critically sinning against God
God is the perfect judge and His justice requires the penalty for sinning against a Holy and infinite God is death, eternal separation from God
The debt to be paid is infinite and we are only finite, so we pay the debt in the Lake of Fire and the Bible has passages that indicate it is for eternity
Adam fell from grace in the garden when he broke God's commands. God could have punished him instantly and ended rebellious and fallen humanity right there. As we are all from Adam, we started with that debt of sin then piled on our own.
(This is the bad news. See The Way for the good news.)
Psalm 14:2–3
The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God. They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
Romans 3:10–12
As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.
They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable;
there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
