Genesis 37:31

Genesis 37:30 Genesis 37:31 (KJV) Genesis 37:32
And he returned unto his brethren, and said, The child [is] not; and I, whither shall I go?
And they took Joseph's coat, and killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the coat in the blood;
And they sent the coat of [many] colours, and they brought [it] to their father; and said, This have we found: know now whether it [be] thy son's coat or no.

Strong's References
  • H1818 — דָּם (dâm, dawm): from דָּמַם (compare אָדַם); blood (as that which when shed causes death) of man or an animal; by analogy, the juice of the grape; figuratively (especially in the plural) bloodshed (i.e. drops of blood); blood(-y, -guiltiness, (-thirsty), [phrase] innocent.
  • H2881 — טָבַל (ṭâbal, taw-bal'): a primitive root; to dip, to immerse; dip, plunge.
  • H3130 — יוֹסֵף (Yôwçêph, yo-safe'): future of יָסַף; let him add (or perhaps simply active participle adding); Joseph, the name of seven Israelites; Joseph. Compare יְהוֹסֵף.
  • H3801 — כְּתֹנֶת (kᵉthôneth, keth-o'-neth): or כֻּתֹּנֶת; from an unused root meaning to cover (compare כָּתֵף); a shirt; coat, garment, robe.
  • H3947 — לָקַח (lâqach, law-kakh'): a primitive root; to take (in the widest variety of applications); accept, bring, buy, carry away, drawn, fetch, get, infold, [idiom] many, mingle, place, receive(-ing), reserve, seize, send for, take (away, -ing, up), use, win.
  • H5795 — עֵז (ʻêz, aze): from עָזַז; a she-goat (as strong), but masculine in plural (which also is used elliptically for goat's hair); (she) goat, kid.
  • H7819 — שָׁחַט (shâchaṭ, shaw-khat'): a primitive root; to slaughter (in sacrifice or massacre); kill, offer, shoot out, slay, slaughter.
  • H8163 — שָׂעִיר (sâʻîyr, saw-eer'): or שָׂעִר; from שָׂעַר; shaggy; as noun, a he-goat; by analogy, a faun; devil, goat, hairy, kid, rough, satyr.

The following Strong's numbers are referenced in the Hebrew (Westminster Leningrad Codex) text but were not explicitly tagged in the KJV source:

  • H853 — אֵת (ʼêth, ayth): apparent contracted from אוֹת in the demonstrative sense of entity; properly, self (but generally used to point out more definitely the object of a verb or preposition, even or namely); (as such unrepresented in English).
