Proverbs 31:4

Proverbs 31:3 Proverbs 31:4 (KJV) Proverbs 31:5
Give not thy strength unto women, nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings.
[It is] not for kings, O Lemuel, [it is] not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink:
Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted.

Strong's References
  • H176 — אוֹ (ʼôw, o): presumed to be the 'constructive' or genitival form of אַו ; short for אַוָּה; desire (and so probably in Proverbs 31:4); hence (by way of alternative) or, also if; also, and, either, if, at the least, [idiom] nor, or, otherwise, then, whether.
  • H335 — אַי (ʼay, ah'ee): perhaps from אַיִן; where? hence how?; how, what, whence, where, whether, which (way).
  • H3196 — יַיִן (yayin, yah'-yin): from an unused root meaning to effervesce; wine (as fermented); by implication, intoxication; banqueting, wine, wine(-bibber).
  • H3927 — לְמוּאֵל (Lᵉmûwʼêl, lem-oo-ale'): or לְמוֹאֵל; from לְמוֹ and אֵל; (belonging) to God; Lemuel or Lemoel, a symbolic name of Solomon; Lemuel.
  • H4428 — מֶלֶךְ (melek, meh'-lek): from מָלַךְ; a king; king, royal.
  • H7336 — רָזַן (râzan, raw-zan'): a primitive root; probably to be heavy, i.e. (figuratively) honorable; prince, ruler.
  • H7941 — שֵׁכָר (shêkâr, shay-kawr'): from שָׁכַר; an intoxicant, i.e. intensely alcoholic liquor; strong drink, [phrase] drunkard, strong wine.
  • H8354 — שָׁתָה (shâthâh, shaw-thaw'): a primitive root; to imbibe (literally or figuratively); [idiom] assuredly, banquet, [idiom] certainly, drink(-er, -ing), drunk ([idiom] -ard), surely. (Prop. intensive of שָׁקָה.)

The following Strong's numbers are referenced in the Hebrew (Westminster Leningrad Codex) text but were not explicitly tagged in the KJV source:

  • H408 — אַל (ʼal, al): a negative particle (akin to לֹא); not (the qualified negation, used as a deprecative); once (Job 24:25) as a noun, nothing; nay, neither, [phrase] never, no, nor, not, nothing (worth), rather than.
