Luke 8:23
| ← Luke 8:22 [words of Jesus] | Luke 8:23 (KJV) | Luke 8:24 → |
|---|---|---|
Now it came to pass on a certain day, that he went into a ship with his disciples: and he said unto them, Let us go over unto the other side of the lake. And they launched forth.
|
But as they sailed he fell asleep: and there came down a storm of wind on the lake; and they were filled [with water], and were in jeopardy.
|
And they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish. Then he arose, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and they ceased, and there was a calm.

Strong's References
- G417 — ἄνεμος (ánemos, an'-em-os): the wind — from the base of ἀήρ; wind; (plural) by implication, (the four) quarters (of the earth):--wind.
- G846 — αὐτός (autós, ow-tos'): he, she, it, they, them, same — from the particle (perhaps akin to the base of ἀήρ through the idea of a baffling wind) (backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative ἑαυτοῦ) of the third person , and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other persons:--her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same, ((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves), there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this (man), those, together, very, which. Compare αὑτοῦ.
- G879 — ἀφυπνόω (aphypnóō, af-oop-no'-o): I fall asleep — from a compound of ἀπό and ὕπνος; properly, to become awake, i.e. (by implication) to drop (off) in slumber:--fall asleep.
- G1161 — δέ (dé, deh): but, on the other hand, and — a primary particle (adversative or continuative); but, and, etc.:--also, and, but, moreover, now (often unexpressed in English).
- G1519 — εἰς (eis, ice): into, in, among, till, for — a primary preposition; to or into (indicating the point reached or entered), of place, time, or (figuratively) purpose (result, etc.); also in adverbial phrases:--(abundant-)ly, against, among, as, at, (back-)ward, before, by, concerning, + continual, + far more exceeding, for (intent, purpose), fore, + forth, in (among, at, unto, -so much that, -to), to the intent that, + of one mind, + never, of, (up-)on, + perish, + set at one again, (so) that, therefore(-unto), throughout, til, to (be, the end, -ward), (here-)until(-to), …ward, (where-)fore, with. Often used in composition with the same general import, but only with verbs (etc.) expressing motion (literally or figuratively).
- G2532 — καί (kaí, kahee): and, even, also, namely — apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.
- G2597 — καταβαίνω (katabaínō, kat-ab-ah'-ee-no): I go down, come down — from κατά and the base of βάσις; to descend (literally or figuratively):--come (get, go, step) down, fall (down).
- G2793 — κινδυνεύω (kindyneúō, kin-doon-yoo'-o): I am in danger — from κίνδυνος; to undergo peril:--be in danger, be (stand) in jeopardy.
- G2978 — λαῖλαψ (laîlaps, lah'-ee-laps): a sudden storm, squall — of uncertain derivation; a whirlwind (squall):--storm, tempest.
- G3041 — λίμνη (límnē, lim'-nay): a lake — probably from λιμήν (through the idea of nearness of shore); a pond (large or small):--lake.
- G4126 — πλέω (pléō, pleh'-o): I sail — probably a form of πλύνω (through the idea of plunging through the water); to pass in a vessel:--sail. See also πλήθω.
- G4845 — συμπληρόω (symplēróō, soom-play-ro'-o): I fill completely — from σύν and πληρόω; to implenish completely, i.e. (of space) to swamp (a boat), or (of time) to accomplish (passive, be complete):--(fully) come, fill up.
The following Strong's numbers are referenced in the Greek (Textus Receptus, Scrivener 1894) text but were not explicitly tagged in the KJV source:
- G3588 — ὁ (ho, ho): the — the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom):--the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc.
