Mark 12:40

Mark 12:39 [words of Jesus] Mark 12:40 (KJV) [words of Jesus] Mark 12:41
And the chief seats in the synagogues, and the uppermost rooms at feasts:
Which devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayers: these shall receive greater damnation.
And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much.

Strong's References
  • G2532 — καί (kaí, kahee): and, even, also, namely — apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.
  • G2719 — κατεσθίω (katesthíō, kat-es-thee'-o): I eat till it is finished — from κατά and ἐσθίω (including its alternate); to eat down, i.e. devour (literally or figuratively):--devour.
  • G2917 — κρίμα (kríma, kree'-mah): a judgment, verdict, lawsuit — from κρίνω; a decision (the function or the effect, for or against ("crime")):--avenge, condemned, condemnation, damnation, + go to law, judgment.
  • G2983 — λαμβάνω (lambánō, lam-ban'-o): I receive, take — a prolonged form of a primary verb, which is use only as an alternate in certain tenses; to take (in very many applications, literally and figuratively (properly objective or active, to get hold of; whereas δέχομαι is rather subjective or passive, to have offered to one; while αἱρέομαι is more violent, to seize or remove)):--accept, + be amazed, assay, attain, bring, X when I call, catch, come on (X unto), + forget, have, hold, obtain, receive (X after), take (away, up).
  • G3117 — μακρός (makrós, mak-ros'): long, distant — from μῆκος; long (in place (distant) or time (neuter plural)):--far, long.
  • G3614 — οἰκία (oikía, oy-kee'-ah): a house, household — from οἶκος; properly, residence (abstractly), but usually (concretely) an abode (literally or figuratively); by implication, a family (especially domestics):--home, house(-hold).
  • G3778 — οὗτος (hoûtos, hoo'-tos): this, he, she, it — from the article ὁ and αὐτός; the he (she or it), i.e. this or that (often with article repeated):--he (it was that), hereof, it, she, such as, the same, these, they, this (man, same, woman), which, who.
  • G4055 — περισσότερος (perissóteros, per-is-sot'-er-os): greater, more — comparative of περισσός; more superabundant (in number, degree or character):--more abundant, greater (much) more, overmuch.
  • G4336 — προσεύχομαι (proseúchomai, pros-yoo'-khom-ahee): I pray, pray for — from πρός and εὔχομαι; to pray to God, i.e. supplicate, worship:--pray (X earnestly, for), make prayer.
  • G4392 — πρόφασις (próphasis, prof'-as-is): a pretext, an excuse — from a compound of πρό and φαίνω; an outward showing, i.e. pretext:--cloke, colour, pretence, show.
  • G5503 — χήρα (chḗra, khay'-rah): a widow — feminine of a presumed derivative apparently from the base of χάσμα through the idea of deficiency; a widow (as lacking a husband), literally or figuratively:--widow.

The following Strong's numbers are referenced in the Greek (Textus Receptus, Scrivener 1894) text but were not explicitly tagged in the KJV source:

  • G3588 — ὁ (ho, ho): the — the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom):--the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc.
