James 1:6
| ← James 1:5 | James 1:6 (KJV) | James 1:7 → |
|---|---|---|
If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all [men] liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
|
But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.
|
For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.

Strong's References
- G154 — αἰτέω (aitéō, ahee-teh'-o): I ask, request, beg, petition — of uncertain derivation; to ask (in genitive case):--ask, beg, call for, crave, desire, require. Compare πυνθάνομαι.
- G416 — ἀνεμίζω (anemízō, an-em-id'-zo): I am blown with the wind — from ἄνεμος; to toss with the wind:--drive with the wind.
- G1063 — γάρ (gár, gar): for — a primary particle; properly, assigning a reason (used in argument, explanation or intensification; often with other particles):--and, as, because (that), but, even, for, indeed, no doubt, seeing, then, therefore, verily, what, why, yet.
- G1161 — δέ (dé, deh): but, on the other hand, and — a primary particle (adversative or continuative); but, and, etc.:--also, and, but, moreover, now (often unexpressed in English).
- G1252 — διακρίνω (diakrínō, dee-ak-ree'-no): I distinguish, discern, doubt, hesitate — from διά and κρίνω; to separate thoroughly, i.e. (literally and reflexively) to withdraw from, or (by implication) oppose; figuratively, to discriminate (by implication, decide), or (reflexively) hesitate:--contend, make (to) differ(-ence), discern, doubt, judge, be partial, stagger, waver.
- G1503 — εἴκω (eíkō, i'-ko): I am like, resemble — apparently a primary verb (perhaps akin to εἴκω through the idea of faintness as a copy); to resemble:--be like.
- G1722 — ἐν (en, en): in, on, among — a primary preposition denoting (fixed) position (in place, time or state), and (by implication) instrumentality (medially or constructively), i.e. a relation of rest (intermediate between εἰς and ἐκ); "in," at, (up-)on, by, etc.:--about, after, against, + almost, X altogether, among, X as, at, before, between, (here-)by (+ all means), for (… sake of), + give self wholly to, (here-)in(-to, -wardly), X mightily, (because) of, (up-)on, (open-)ly, X outwardly, one, X quickly, X shortly, (speedi-)ly, X that, X there(-in, -on), through(-out), (un-)to(-ward), under, when, where(-with), while, with(-in). Often used in compounds, with substantially the same import; rarely with verbs of motion, and then not to indicate direction, except (elliptically) by a separate (and different) preposition.
- G2281 — θάλασσα (thálassa, thal'-as-sah): the sea, lake — probably prolonged from ἅλς; the sea (genitive case or specially):--sea.
- G2532 — καί (kaí, kahee): and, even, also, namely — apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.
- G2830 — κλύδων (klýdōn, kloo'-dohn): rough water — from (to billow or dash over); a surge of the sea (literally or figuratively):--raging, wave.
- G3367 — μηδείς (mēdeís, may-dice'): no one, nothing — from μή and εἷς; not even one (man, woman, thing):--any (man, thing), no (man), none, not (at all, any man, a whit), nothing, + without delay.
- G4102 — πίστις (pístis, pis'-tis): faith, belief, trust — from πείθω; persuasion, i.e. credence; moral conviction (of religious truth, or the truthfulness of God or a religious teacher), especially reliance upon Christ for salvation; abstractly, constancy in such profession; by extension, the system of religious (Gospel) truth itself:--assurance, belief, believe, faith, fidelity.
- G4494 — ῥιπίζω (rhipízō, hrip-id'-zo): I toss to and fro — from a derivative of ῥίπτω (meaning a fan or bellows); to breeze up, i.e. (by analogy) to agitate (into waves):--toss.
The following Strong's numbers are referenced in the Greek (Textus Receptus, Scrivener 1894) text but were not explicitly tagged in the KJV source:
- G3588 — ὁ (ho, ho): the — the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom):--the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc.
