And he answering said to [his] father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither transgressed I at any time thy commandment: and yet thou never gavest me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends:

But as soon as this thy son was come, which hath devoured thy living with harlots, thou hast killed for him the fatted calf.

- G611 — ἀποκρίνομαι (apokrínomai, ap-ok-ree'-nom-ahee): I answer, reply — from ἀπό and ; to conclude for oneself, i.e. (by implication) to respond; by Hebraism (compare עָנָה) to begin to speak (where an address is expected):--answer.
- G1161 — δέ (dé, deh): but, on the other hand, and — a primary particle (adversative or continuative); but, and, etc.:--also, and, but, moreover, now (often unexpressed in English).

- G1785 — ἐντολή (entolḗ, en-tol-ay'): an ordinance, injunction, command — from ἐντέλλομαι; injunction, i.e. an authoritative prescription:--commandment, precept.
- G2036 — ἔπω (épō, ep'-o): a primary verb (used only in the definite past tense, the others being borrowed from ἐρέω, ῥέω, and φημί); to speak or say (by word or writing):--answer, bid, bring word, call, command, grant, say (on), speak, tell. Compare λέγω.
- G2056 — ἔριφος (ériphos, er'-if-os): a goat — perhaps from the same as ἔριον (through the idea of hairiness); a kid or (genitive case) goat:--goat, kid.
- G2094 — ἔτος (étos, et'-os): a year — apparently a primary word; a year:--year.
- G2165 — εὐφραίνω (euphraínō, yoo-frah'-ee-no): I cheer, am glad, make merry — from εὖ and φρήν; to put (middle voice or passively, be) in a good frame of mind, i.e. rejoice:--fare, make glad, be (make) merry, rejoice.
- G2400 — ἰδού (idoú, id-oo'): See! Lo! Behold! Look! — second person singular imperative middle voice of εἴδω; used as imperative lo!; --behold, lo, see.
- G2443 — ἵνα (hína, hin'-ah): in order that, so that — probably from the same as the former part of ἑαυτοῦ (through the demonstrative idea; compare ὁ); in order that (denoting the purpose or the result):--albeit, because, to the intent (that), lest, so as, (so) that, (for) to. Compare ἵνα μή.
- G2532 — καί (kaí, kahee): and, even, also, namely — apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.
- G3326 — μετά (metá, met-ah'): with, after — a primary preposition (often used adverbially); properly, denoting accompaniment; "amid" (local or causal); modified variously according to the case (genitive association, or accusative succession) with which it is joined; occupying an intermediate position between ἀπό or ἐκ and εἰς or πρός; less intimate than ἐν and less close than σύν):--after(-ward), X that he again, against, among, X and, + follow, hence, hereafter, in, of, (up-)on, + our, X and setting, since, (un-)to, + together, when, with (+ -out). - G3450 — μοῦ (moû, moo): the simpler form of ἐμοῦ; of me:--I, me, mine (own), my.
- G3763 — οὐδέποτε (oudépote, oo-dep'-ot-eh): never — from οὐδέ and ποτέ; not even at any time, i.e. never at all:--neither at any time, never, nothing at any time.
- G3928 — παρέρχομαι (parérchomai, par-er'-khom-ahee): I pass by — from παρά and ἔρχομαι; to come near or aside, i.e. to approach (arrive), go by (or away), (figuratively) perish or neglect, (causative) avert:--come (forth), go, pass (away, by, over), past, transgress.
- G3962 — πατήρ (patḗr, pat-ayr'): father, Father, ancestor — apparently a primary word; a "father" (literally or figuratively, near or more remote):--father, parent.
- G4671 — σοί (soí, soy): dative case of σύ; to thee:--thee, thine own, thou, thy.
- G4675 — σοῦ (soû, soo): genitive case of σύ; of thee, thy:--X home, thee, thine (own), thou, thy.
