Matthew 5:20

Matthew 5:19 [words of Jesus] Matthew 5:20 (KJV) [words of Jesus] Matthew 5:21 [words of Jesus]
Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach [them], the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed [the righteousness] of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.
Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:

  • G1063 — γάρ (gár, gar): for — a primary particle; properly, assigning a reason (used in argument, explanation or intensification; often with other particles):--and, as, because (that), but, even, for, indeed, no doubt, seeing, then, therefore, verily, what, why, yet.
  • G1122 — γραμματεύς (grammateús, gram-mat-yooce'): a scribe, town-clerk, man of learning — from γράμμα. a writer, i.e. (professionally) scribe or secretary:--scribe, town-clerk.
  • G1343 — δικαιοσύνη (dikaiosýnē, dik-ah-yos-oo'-nay): justice, justness, righteousness — from δίκαιος; equity (of character or act); specially (Christian) justification:--righteousness.
  • G1519 — εἰς (eis, ice): into, in, among, till, for — a primary preposition; to or into (indicating the point reached or entered), of place, time, or (figuratively) purpose (result, etc.); also in adverbial phrases:--(abundant-)ly, against, among, as, at, (back-)ward, before, by, concerning, + continual, + far more exceeding, for (intent, purpose), fore, + forth, in (among, at, unto, -so much that, -to), to the intent that, + of one mind, + never, of, (up-)on, + perish, + set at one again, (so) that, therefore(-unto), throughout, til, to (be, the end, -ward), (here-)until(-to), …ward, (where-)fore, with. Often used in composition with the same general import, but only with verbs (etc.) expressing motion (literally or figuratively).
  • G1525 — εἰσέρχομαι (eisérchomai, ice-er'-khom-ahee): I go in, come in, enter — from εἰς and ἔρχομαι; to enter (literally or figuratively):--X arise, come (in, into), enter in(-to), go in (through).
  • G2532 — καί (kaí, kahee): and, even, also, namely — apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.
  • G3004 — λέγω (légō, leg'-o): I say, speak — a primary verb; properly, to "lay" forth, i.e. (figuratively) relate (in words (usually of systematic or set discourse; whereas ἔπω and φημί generally refer to an individual expression or speech respectively; while ῥέω is properly to break silence merely, and λαλέω means an extended or random harangue)); by implication, to mean:--ask, bid, boast, call, describe, give out, name, put forth, say(-ing, on), shew, speak, tell, utter.
  • G3362 — ἐὰν μή (eàn mḗ, eh-an' may): i.e. ἐάν and μή; if not, i.e. unless:--X before, but, except, if, no, (if, + whosoever) not.

  • G3754 — ὅτι (hóti, hot'-ee): that, since, because — neuter of ὅστις as conjunction; demonstrative, that (sometimes redundant); causative, because:--as concerning that, as though, because (that), for (that), how (that), (in) that, though, why.
  • G3772 — οὐρανός (ouranós, oo-ran-os'): the sky, the heaven — perhaps from the same as ὄρος (through the idea of elevation); the sky; by extension, heaven (as the abode of God); by implication, happiness, power, eternity; specially, the Gospel (Christianity):--air, heaven(-ly), sky.
  • G4052 — περισσεύω (perisseúō, per-is-syoo'-o): I exceed, am left over — from περισσός; to superabound (in quantity or quality), be in excess, be superfluous; also (transitively) to cause to superabound or excel:--(make, more) abound, (have, have more) abundance (be more) abundant, be the better, enough and to spare, exceed, excel, increase, be left, redound, remain (over and above).
  • G4119 — πλείων (pleíōn, pli-own): more, greater — comparative of πολύς; more in quantity, number, or quality; also (in plural) the major portion:--X above, + exceed, more excellent, further, (very) great(-er), long(-er), (very) many, greater (more) part, + yet but.

See μή.
  • G3361 — μή (mḗ, may): not, lest — a primary particle of qualified negation (whereas οὐ expresses an absolute denial); (adverb) not, (conjunction) lest; also (as an interrogative implying a negative answer (whereas οὐ expects an affirmative one)) whether:--any but (that), X forbear, + God forbid, + lack, lest, neither, never, no (X wise in), none, nor, (can-)not, nothing, that not, un(-taken), without.
