Romans 11:20

Romans 11:19 Romans 11:20 (KJV) Romans 11:21
Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be graffed in.
Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear:
For if God spared not the natural branches, [take heed] lest he also spare not thee.

  • G570 — ἀπιστία (apistía, ap-is-tee'-ah): unbelief, unfaithfulness, distrust — from ἄπιστος; faithlessness, i.e. (negatively) disbelief (lack of Christian faith), or (positively) unfaithfulness (disobedience):--unbelief.
  • G1161 — δέ (dé, deh): but, on the other hand, and — a primary particle (adversative or continuative); but, and, etc.:--also, and, but, moreover, now (often unexpressed in English).
  • G1575 — ἐκκλάω (ekkláō, ek-klah'-o): I break off — from ἐκ and κλάω; to exscind:--break off.
  • G2476 — ἵστημι (hístēmi, his'-tay-mee): I cause to stand, stand — a prolonged form of a primary (of the same meaning, and used for it in certain tenses); to stand (transitively or intransitively), used in various applications (literally or figuratively):--abide, appoint, bring, continue, covenant, establish, hold up, lay, present, set (up), stanch, stand (by, forth, still, up). Compare τίθημι.
  • G2573 — καλῶς (kalōs, kal-oce'): well, nobly, rightly — adverb from καλός; well (usually morally):--(in a) good (place), honestly, + recover, (full) well.
  • G3361 — μή (mḗ, may): not, lest — a primary particle of qualified negation (whereas οὐ expresses an absolute denial); (adverb) not, (conjunction) lest; also (as an interrogative implying a negative answer (whereas οὐ expects an affirmative one)) whether:--any but (that), X forbear, + God forbid, + lack, lest, neither, never, no (X wise in), none, nor, (can-)not, nothing, that not, un(-taken), without. Often used in compounds in substantially the same relations. See also ἐὰν μή, ἵνα μή, οὐ μή, μῆκος, μηκύνω, μήν, μὴ οὐκ.
  • G4102 — πίστις (pístis, pis'-tis): faith, belief, trust — from πείθω; persuasion, i.e. credence; moral conviction (of religious truth, or the truthfulness of God or a religious teacher), especially reliance upon Christ for salvation; abstractly, constancy in such profession; by extension, the system of religious (Gospel) truth itself:--assurance, belief, believe, faith, fidelity.
  • G4771 — σύ (sý, soo): you — the personal pronoun of the second person singular; thou:-- thou. See also σέ, σοί, σοῦ; and for the plural ὑμᾶς, ὑμεῖς, ὑμῖν, ὑμῶν.
  • G5309 — ὑψηλοφρονέω (hypsēlophronéō, hoop-say-lo-fron-eh'-o): I am high-minded, proud — from a compound of ὑψηλός and φρήν; to be lofty in mind, i.e. arrogant:--be highminded.
  • G5399 — φοβέω (phobéō, fob-eh'-o): I fear, am terrified — from φόβος; to frighten, i.e. (passively) to be alarmed; by analogy, to be in awe of, i.e. revere:--be (+ sore) afraid, fear (exceedingly), reverence.

The following Strong's numbers are referenced in the Greek (Textus Receptus, Scrivener 1894) text but were not explicitly tagged in the KJV source:

  • G3588 — ὁ (ho, ho): the — the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom):--the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc.
