2 Peter 2:18
| ← 2 Peter 2:17 | 2 Peter 2:18 (KJV) | 2 Peter 2:19 → |
|---|---|---|
These are wells without water, clouds that are carried with a tempest; to whom the mist of darkness is reserved for ever.
|
For when they speak great swelling [words] of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, [through much] wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error.
|
While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage.

ἀναστρεφομένους, |
anastrephomenous | G390 | V-PPP-APM | from them who live |
- G390 — ἀναστρέφω (anastréphō, an-as-tref'-o): I overturn, turn upside down, return, mid. and pass: I conduct myself,
live — from ἀνά and στρέφω; to overturn; also to return; by implication, to busy oneself, i.e. remain, live:--abide, behave self, have conversation, live, overthrow, pass, return, be used.
- G668 — ἀποφεύγω (apopheúgō, ap-of-yoo'-go): I flee from, escape — from ἀπό and φεύγω; (figuratively) to escape:--escape.
- G766 — ἀσέλγεια (asélgeia, as-elg'-i-a): wantonness, lewdness — from a compound of Α (as a negative particle) and a presumed (of uncertain derivation, but apparently meaning continent); licentiousness (sometimes including other vices):--filthy, lasciviousness, wantonness.
- G1063 — γάρ (gár, gar): for — a primary particle; properly, assigning a reason (used in argument, explanation or intensification; often with other particles):--and, as, because (that), but, even, for, indeed, no doubt, seeing, then, therefore, verily, what, why, yet.
- G1185 — δελεάζω (deleázō, del-eh-ad'-zo): I allure, entice by a bait — from the base of δόλος; to entrap, i.e. (figuratively) delude:--allure, beguile, entice.
- G1722 — ἐν (en, en): in, on, among — a primary preposition denoting (fixed) position (in place, time or state), and (by implication) instrumentality (medially or constructively), i.e. a relation of rest (intermediate between εἰς and ἐκ); "in," at, (up-)on, by, etc.:--about, after, against, + almost, X altogether, among, X as, at, before, between, (here-)by (+ all means), for (… sake of), + give self wholly to, (here-)in(-to, -wardly), X mightily, (because) of, (up-)on, (open-)ly, X outwardly, one, X quickly, X shortly, (speedi-)ly, X that, X there(-in, -on), through(-out), (un-)to(-ward), under, when, where(-with), while, with(-in). Often used in compounds, with substantially the same import; rarely with verbs of motion, and then not to indicate direction, except (elliptically) by a separate (and different) preposition.
- G1939 — ἐπιθυμία (epithymía, ep-ee-thoo-mee'-ah): desire, eagerness for, inordinate desire, lust — from ἐπιθυμέω; a longing (especially for what is forbidden):--concupiscence, desire, lust (after).
- G3153 — ματαιότης (mataiótēs, mat-ah-yot'-ace): vanity, purposelessness — from μάταιος; inutility; figuratively, transientness; morally, depravity:--vanity.
- G3689 — ὄντως (óntōs, on'-toce): really, truly — adverb of the oblique cases of ὤν; really:--certainly, clean, indeed, of a truth, verily.
- G4106 — πλάνη (plánē, plan'-ay): a wandering, error — feminine of πλάνος (as abstractly); objectively, fraudulence; subjectively, a straying from orthodoxy or piety:--deceit, to deceive, delusion, error.
- G4561 — σάρξ (sárx, sarx): flesh, body — probably from the base of σαρόω; flesh (as stripped of the skin), i.e. (strictly) the meat of an animal (as food), or (by extension) the body (as opposed to the soul (or spirit), or as the symbol of what is external, or as the means of kindred), or (by implication) human nature (with its frailties (physically or morally) and passions), or (specially), a human being (as such):--carnal(-ly, + -ly minded), flesh(-ly).
- G5246 — ὑπέρογκος (hypéronkos, hoop-er'-ong-kos): immoderate, boastful — from ὑπέρ and ὄγκος; bulging over, i.e. (figuratively) insolent:--great swelling.
- G5350 — φθέγγομαι (phthéngomai, ftheng'-gom-ahee): I speak aloud, utter — probably akin to φέγγος and thus to φημί; to utter a clear sound, i.e. (generally) to proclaim:--speak.
The following Strong's numbers are referenced in the Greek (Textus Receptus, Scrivener 1894) text but were not explicitly tagged in the KJV source:
- G3588 — ὁ (ho, ho): the — the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom):--the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc.
